From my latest release, The Sack, this poem speaks to the little “sacks” we all carry — those heavy, bossy thoughts that whisper “you’re not ready” or “you’re too slow.” In the story, we learn to open that sack, release those thoughts, and transform them into something lighter — “Soar thoughts” — reflections that lift us up instead of weighing us down.
The Sack was written to help students recognize negative self-talk and reframe it into kinder, more empowering messages. It’s a gentle reminder that when we let go of what holds us back, we can finally feel free to soar. Created to nurture self-awareness, resilience, and positivity in young minds.

Words are powerful. They can break someone down or lift them up. As teachers, we have such an incredible opportunity to help our students understand that their voices matter — that their words can bring light, kindness, and hope into the world.
In times when language is so often used to divide and hurt, this work feels more important than ever. Let’s guide our students to use their voices to connect, encourage, and inspire.
That’s why I wrote Words — and I’d love to share it with you as a way to start conversations with your students about how we can all use language to build others up. You can also find a link to a reading of the book online, which can be shared with your class to help spark discussion and reflection.
